Although I don't tend to go out of my way to find links, "compare and contrasts", or anything of that nature when I do a retrospective special like this, I was pleased to notice that Angela Conway, who effectively was AC Marias, also directed the video for Nick Cave's "The Weeping Song" which appears right after her "One Of Our Girls Has Gone Missing". I couldn't have contrived that if I'd tried!

LIST 44 - 13/08/10 (1990 special, part one)

A little later than envisaged (and not by design), here at last is part one of this year's "It was 20 years ago, etc. etc." selection. In light of its recent reappraisal following Clarks Shoes' use of it, "Birdhouse In Your Soul" might have been an obvious choice from They Might Be Giants' "Flood" album, but I thought better of it. Equally I resisted the temptation to include anything from The Field Mice's "Skywriting", despite it being not just my favourite Sarah album, but favourite album. Ever. Full stop. "So Said Kay" just seemed a better song to finish with than anything on that album, so on it went.

Jello Biafra has never sounded so unhinged as on the Lard selection here, and even though that was kind of the point of that cover version, it's still a deliciously unsettling listen. Another 1990 selection will follow next week.

On playing the Silver Columns track the other day, the second thing that entered my head (after "this is quite good, isn't it!") was that it bore more than a passing resemblance to John Foxx's 1981 hit "Europe After The Rain". Not a plagiaristic resemblance, just a resemblance. See what you think.

The reappearances of both Emma Pollock and the ageless Teenage Fanclub have been long-awaited on these pages - the latter's "Baby Lee" is what was played (for close to the first time, if not *the* first time) at Indietracks last year as "Geddy Lee", supposedly in honour of the Rush bassist of the same name!

Elsewhere, the "Neon Lights" played by former June Brides mainstay Phil Wilson *is* the Kraftwerk song; and the piece interpreted by messrs Jarousky and Namura *does* date from 1678 (originally written by Henry Purcell) - you've read the date right...
