LIST 56 - 24/12/10 (Christmas Special, part two)

As promised, and indeed threatened, here is the second half of the That Music List Christmas Special for your delight and delectation just 24 hours shy of the main event. Nothing too festive about the likes of The Fall and HT & OJ's respective efforts, of course, but the likes of the late Frank Sidebottom certainly redress the pro-Christmas balance and then some.

That's it from That Music List until sometime in the New Year (probably midwinter), but return it will. All that remains for me to do is to thank everyone who's been in touch about the blog this year and last, and anyone else who has enjoyed the selections over this period of time. Certainly more to come... 'Til then, however, very best wishes of the season to you all, and may 2011 deal you a kind hand.

LIST 54 - 22/10/10

Lots of splendid things to round off the current series of That Music List, not least the splendid return of erstwhile Peel faves Bearsuit and a video by Darren Hayman that's pretty much the copybook definition of "less is more" (one piece of card, one set of pencils, one scanner - that's it!). Trembling Blue Stars, meanwhile, get the then and now treatment (to the surprise of none of you out there, I suspect!).

You read the above correctly, by the way - this is indeed the last regular That Music List for a bit, as work commitments start to bite (and after a few weeks' worth of unemployment around late spring, those are words I didn't necessarily think I'd be able to say again this year). There will be at least a couple of Christmas specials either before or during the festive period, though, before the List returns for another extended run of weekly editions some time in the midwinter. That is a promise, and indeed a threat!

In the meantime, thanks again for your patronage over these last 20 months or thereabouts.

LIST 53 - 15/10/10

It's confirmed - the brand new releases from Trembling Blue Stars, namely an album and two EPs, will be the last.

With that ends 15 years' worth of, for the greater part, Bob Wratten soundtracking his own life with disarming, emotionally laid-bare candour and erudition under the TBS moniker, and at the same time him unwittingly putting to music those lives of mine and doubtless many others worldwide. The likes of Never Loved You More, Farewell to Forever, It's Easier to Smile and Dark Eyes, in particular, are almost painfully redolent of past, present and in all likelihood future chapters of my personal history.

As such, it's safe to assume that "All Our Tomorrows", included below and replete with something close to an official video from Elefant Records, will not be the only song from TBS's final batch to feature in these annals in the short term.

1995, the year TBS formed, was also the year Tindersticks released their favourite song of mine, the eight-minute deadpan narrative "My Sister", included here alongside a track from this year's album for 4AD. Grass Widow and Trash Kit, meanwhile, are included to cheer me up a bit, having managed to miss them play a gig literally a minute's walk from my office a couple of weeks ago owing to sheer volume of work. Unlucky!

LIST 52 - 08/10/10 ("Remember this problem? The German language...")

...Thus began both the FSK album "The Sound Of Music" and the splendid German language music compilation "Wo ist Zuhause, Mama - Perlen Deutschsprachiger Popmusik" 18 and 15 years ago respectively. When I first started considering this week's list, it seemed too good a phrase not to recycle!

So, yes, herewith 20 tracks from German language performers (the presence of the likes of the astonishing Austrian punk-folk duo Attwenger prevents it from being considered a list of German performers), singing more or less all auf Deutsch. "More or less" because, ironically give the opening, the FSK track included contains more than a smattering of English!

It's all in context, though, and the track, "I Wish I Could Sprechen Sie Deutsch", will be remembered very fondly by those of you who were mid-1980s devotees of the John Peel Festive 50. The clip I've found of the track does indeed include the great man before and after, briefly.

Inevitably there were things I found myself leaving out in trying to straddle over three decades' worth of highlights even without pinching any of the sort of stuff a million Neue Deutsche Welle or Darkwave compilations already cover and cover rather better (that's a thought: wonder if Zillo is still going?); and I don't doubt there'll be another list of this nature in 2011 to accommodate the overspill.

In the meantime, and in the words of Nina Hagen in the closing track, "Ich wünsche Ihnen einen recht guten Empfang"...

LIST 51 - 01/10/10

Another standard, as opposed to themed, List this week, but at the same time two contributions could fall under a loose theme of courageous returns. Laetitia Sadier's solo album, out on September 27th, was at least partly recorded in the aftermath of her sister's suicide - the opening track addresses that tragedy with both unflinching honesty and quiet dignity, and is included here.

Edwyn Collins, meanwhile, has of course had his own trials in recent years, but emerging from the other side of these is "Losing Sleep", technically the second album released since his two brain haemorrhages in 2005 but the first entirely conceived and completed this side of them. The title track leaves little to the imagination regarding his comparatively reduced state nowadays, but at the same time of mawkish self-pity there is none.

I'm minded to include the Go-Betweens' "Right Here" this week, incidentally, after hearing The Peterboroughs' brave reading of it on accordion, uke, banjo and glockenspiel at the Nottingham Indiepop Weekender six days ago. It was, alas, the Leeds quartet's farewell gig, so unless on the fly recordings exist anywhere I wouldn't know where to direct you to a recording of it with any degree of confidence. My apologies!

LIST 50 - 24/09/10

So there it is, the first single off the new Belle & Sebastian long-player, complete with top-name actress talent and that. Hasn't grabbed me as the strongest song of those I've heard so far by any means; and with guitar acts almost universally failing to grab any sort of toehold in the hit parade nowadays, I will be looking at its progress upon its imminent release with interest rather than the usual hope and expectation.

Elsewhere, several of the acts turning out at this weekend's Nottingham Indiepop festie get an airing, as does the newest Tunng release as vaunted last week. The OMD comeback album is anything but a total triumph (not surprising given its origin as mostly re-imagined session / lost tracks), but part one of the title track has rightly piqued its share of radio interest and is featured here alongside something all of 30 years its senior from the same source.

The Orb's "Loving You" is a song with a story, having existed in its original form commercially for not much time at all before Minnie Riperton's legal team stomped on the then duo of Alex Paterson and Jimmy (KLF) Cauty. Even all this time later, it's still probably my favourite piece of work from the band in any of its many guises.

Oh, apparently this is the fiftieth That Music List. Compiling them has been a lot of fun so far - hours of my life I'll neither get nor want back! ;-)

LIST 49 - 17/09/10

Back once more, with the first upload to this list so far of anything from Belle and Sebastian's long-awaited "Write About Love" album. I don't think it disappoints - quite the opposite. Whether the remainder of the album entirely stacks up I have yet to discover, though.

It's not the only new produce I'm delighted to include after years of waiting. Neither Stars nor Blonde Redhead have exactly galloped to follow up their previous efforts, but the wait has been worth it in both instances. I'm advised the latter can thank Fever Ray's producer for some creative input this time round - certainly sounds like it if so, and definitely not unwelcome.

Midnight Juggernauts, Connan (still Mockasin but minus the Mockasins, if that makes sense) and Chromeo are other welcome returnees, whilst the appearance of Tunng's "Bullets" this week serves as a prelude for the inclusion of a new track by them / him next.

Oh, and apparently some people out there are still making what the late John Peel christened "bastard pop", so I've finished with some of that this time.

LIST 48 - 10/09/10

A few favourites from a while back return with new produce in this list (though in some cases it's been out a few weeks and I've just missed it. Oops). The New Pornographers' "Sing Me Spanish Techno" is still one of the Youtube clips I return to the most, with both song and video guaranteed to make me smile. "Crash Years" is reassuringly up to par, and features lead vocals this time from what I presume must be Neko Case rather than Carl Newman, unless the latter has had an accident recently.

Teki Latex's contribution owes more than a little to Kraftwerk, likewise the Pipettes to Sophie Ellis-Bextor's first solo album, but don't let that damn either with faint praise, as pale facsimiles they are not. Cath Carroll, who - frighteningly for those of us who remember her as the fresh-faced singer / guitarist with C86 act Miaow - turned 50 earlier this year, gets the then and now treatment, whilst the terrifically named Mike Baker The Bike Maker offers up old school perv hiphop over some footage of Russ Meyer's notorious Return to the Valley of the Dolls. Oh, don't pull a face - it's not like I've uploaded The Human Centipede without warning you...

All this and I still haven't mentioned the triumphant return of James Yuill with another contender for my favourite single of the year (as "No Pins Allowed" had been in 2008), or that set-closers Elliot Jack play at the Midlands Art Centre at the Yardbird Jazz Club in Birmingham this Saturday, September 11th at 6pm. That endorsement for their innovative, warm-hearted electronica would have stood even if I hadn't worked with their bassist for two years way back when...

LIST 47 - 03/09/10

I'm always willing to be surprised by an act I've never hitherto thought much of, and MGMT's splendid piece of chamber pop is probably the latest case in point - far more interesting and better executed to my mind than anything on the "Time to Pretend" album, though the comparatively modest sales of both single and parent album suggest this isn't the more widely held view. Bah.

Elsewhere this week, there's an Eels here and now feature, with the newer track evidently coming from the first of two albums slated for 2010. The Rodolfo Halffter composition marks a first foray into comptemporary South American classical music for this site, and similarly I don't think we've had too many Field Mice-influenced solo projects from Finland prior to Matador Jose!

Finally, and inexcusably overdue, for which apologies, I've given over the last few minutes to Frank Sidebottom by way of a tribute to his earthly keeper Chris Sievey, who as you'll know lost his battle with cancer this summer. Although mostly catching Chris's output in the Freshies retrospectively, I do remember hearing the first Radio Timperley Frank ever did on the James H Reeve show for Piccadilly Radio (I don't know if this was the first one ever) on the evening of broadcast. There's a near-complete set of all his Oink! cartoons in the other room, too.

To this undefatigable, eternally youthful, relentlessly optimistic comic creation I wish a fond farewell, and say thank you for the memories.

LIST 46 - 27/08/10

Back to a regular sort of list again this week after the previous two excursions back to 1990, starting with a bit of shape-related serendipity over the first three tracks. Good to learn of the return to action of the splendid synthpop duo Lo-Fi-FNK after an absence of getting on for four years, and of the important news that Nick Cave's found the keys to his dressing-up box again....

Elsewhere there's some then and now treatment of Teenage Fanclub, Charlotte Hatherley getting a paint-job, and further evidence of why SPC Eco is an even better parent-and-child pairing up than Lieutenant Pigeon. No, really.

Oh yes, and another candidate for single of the year, this time from Animal Collective staple Panda Bear, who seems to have taken custody of Tim Smith's book of chords.

LIST 45 - 20/08/10 (1990 special, part two)

As promised, herewith part two of our romp through whatever I could find (and liked!) on that there Youtube from 20 years ago.

Although I don't tend to go out of my way to find links, "compare and contrasts", or anything of that nature when I do a retrospective special like this, I was pleased to notice that Angela Conway, who effectively was AC Marias, also directed the video for Nick Cave's "The Weeping Song" which appears right after her "One Of Our Girls Has Gone Missing". I couldn't have contrived that if I'd tried!

"What Time Is Love" appears in its 1990 smash hit form rather than the 1988 original.

LIST 44 - 13/08/10 (1990 special, part one)

A little later than envisaged (and not by design), here at last is part one of this year's "It was 20 years ago, etc. etc." selection. In light of its recent reappraisal following Clarks Shoes' use of it, "Birdhouse In Your Soul" might have been an obvious choice from They Might Be Giants' "Flood" album, but I thought better of it. Equally I resisted the temptation to include anything from The Field Mice's "Skywriting", despite it being not just my favourite Sarah album, but favourite album. Ever. Full stop. "So Said Kay" just seemed a better song to finish with than anything on that album, so on it went.

Jello Biafra has never sounded so unhinged as on the Lard selection here, and even though that was kind of the point of that cover version, it's still a deliciously unsettling listen. Another 1990 selection will follow next week.

LIST 43 - 06/08/10

On playing the Silver Columns track the other day, the second thing that entered my head (after "this is quite good, isn't it!") was that it bore more than a passing resemblance to John Foxx's 1981 hit "Europe After The Rain". Not a plagiaristic resemblance, just a resemblance. See what you think.

The reappearances of both Emma Pollock and the ageless Teenage Fanclub have been long-awaited on these pages - the latter's "Baby Lee" is what was played (for close to the first time, if not *the* first time) at Indietracks last year as "Geddy Lee", supposedly in honour of the Rush bassist of the same name!

Elsewhere, the "Neon Lights" played by former June Brides mainstay Phil Wilson *is* the Kraftwerk song; and the piece interpreted by messrs Jarousky and Namura *does* date from 1678 (originally written by Henry Purcell) - you've read the date right...

LIST 42 - 30/07/10

Hello again,

A regular List for you this week following the Festival specials on the last four occasions, though there is a small element of "festival creep" in the selection with the likes of Linda Guilala, School Of Seven Bells, The Just Joans and The Orchids making a swift reappearance.

I'm delighted that someone suggested Billie The Vision & The Dancers to me in the last few days, and their splendid fragile acoustic numbers could yet become my next obsession. At the other end of the niceness scale, perhaps, the more theologically delicate of you may like to know in advance that much in the Juno Reactor video either depicts or hints at Satanism. Albeit in plasticine. Click on the link or not as you see fit - suptayoo.

That Music List was defunct during the World Cup, as you probably know, so the Eux Autres World Cup track, replete with Japanese animation video, is our somewhat belated addition to the canon of appropriate footie songs. Love them as we do, though, Standard Fare's Mexico-themed equivalent just didn't do it for me, but it's there on Youtube in any event if you fancy a peek at the trio kitted out as sombrero-and-moustache-touting archetypes...

LIST 41 - 23/07/10 (Indietracks Festival special, part two)

Part two of the Indietracks preview, and an excuse at last to include "Donald...", my favourite Ballboy track. The prospect of seeing The Orchids at long last, after 20 years of trying, is joyous; likewise the front ranks of Juniper Moon in their current Linda Giulala guise. Bring it on! Next List to follow seven days hence, with me hopefully still grinning like a loon after three days' worth of indiepop goodness...

LIST 40 - 16/07/10 (Indietracks Festival special, part one)

...And from Latitude, so we move onto Indietracks, the only festival I'll be getting to go to in person this summer, and the one I regard as the most indispensible now - it'll be my third visit, and certainly not the last.

Finding clips for some of the Indietracks roster is hard, given some of their degrees of Youtube-shyness, but I've managed to fill two Lists all the same. I noticed in compiling that I hadn't included "Do The Indie Kid" previously, despite thinking I had - it turned out that I'd added "My Boss was in an Indie Band Once" in List 37 in its stead by accident. As the latter had already appeared in List 31, it thereby counts as the first ever song to figure in more than one list. Drat it, I was hoping to go longer than that!!! Well done if you spotted the error before I did. Ah well, one duplicate every 600-odd songs isn't bad going, I suppose...

LIST 39 - 09/07/10 (Latitude Festival special, part two)

Herewith the second of our two-part trawl through the Latitude line-up for this year. I seem to have saved a couple of the more disturbing videos (Archie Bronson and Kelpe) for right near the end, but I hope you'll have finished your tea by the time you get to those. Percussive Welsh quartet Islet are a real joyous find - I'm going to enjoy following them from hereon. Likewise Yuck, unheralded up to now but in the same musical postcode as The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and interesting on that basis alone.

LIST 38 - 02/07/10 (Latitude Festival special, part one)

Back again, with apologies for the two-month absence since the last update. We have an unforeseen bout of unemployment, the resultant scramble for a new job, and the 150-mile move back up the country to start that job to thank for this, but everything is mercifully back on an even keel now and That Music List comes to you from hereon in from God's own Yorkshire. It's great to be back up this neck of the woods again after over six years away.

Be that all as it may. As per last year, July's Lists are mostly given over to festival line-ups, with this being the first of two specials to celebrate the upcoming Latitude event in Suffolk. Overall I think it's actually a poorer line-up than last year's, with a lot of the space on the small, interesting stages given over to major label (over-) endorsed singer-songwriter wannabees - how many Tiffany Pages can one industry sustain?

No matter. I think I've found some decent stuff all the same. Delighted to see how much the likes of The Good Natured and Elinor Rose Dougall are developing now, and how have I managed to miss School Of Seven Bells for so long? Joe Worricker, meanwhile, is either a genius pop creation or Rough Trade well and truly on the p*ss-take - I still can't decide which...

LIST 37 - 30/04/10 (2009 leftovers)

I suppose this could count as the first "themed" edition of That Music List for 2010, however tenuously. A glance through the backlog of stuff I was still wanting to include revealed rather a lot of songs from last year, for all that it finished four months ago! No matter.

LIST 36 - 23/04/10

There's just the 17 songs in this week's 80-minute digest, but lots to interest nonetheless. Johnny Cash continues to release new product from beyond the grave, with the choice here taken from new release "American VI", whilst the Durutti Column track is taken from the self-explanatory tribute album "Paean to Tony Wilson" - sampled thoughts from the great man himself feature prominently. Massive Attack get the then and now treatment, whilst Goblin's track corrects this website's dereliction of duty hitherto to include any soundtracks from Italian splatter movies. ;-D

LIST 35 - 16/04/10

There's the welcome return of a number of long-absent friends in this week's digest. The return of The Hidden Cameras I managed to miss completely (Oops. How???), but progress on Gogol Bordello and Nina Nastasia has been monitored on a nigh-monthly basis for years, and has ultimately proven well worth it.

The new Bomb The Bass single is reason enough to do a Then And Now on Tim Simenon's enduring project (23 years and counting, I make it), and there are a couple of other genuine curiosities. The Trembling Blue Stars track, all ninety-three seconds of it, was recorded for live-action / puppet-based kids' TV show Yo Gabba Gabba of all things; whilst Anna Fröderberg's track is taken from an album released in January entitled "27 Songs from Barcelona", a triple album featuring one track from each of the 27 members of sainted Swedish indie-pop choir I'm From Barcelona. As the album was limited to 200 vinyl copies worldwide, it's safe to assume we won't be seeing too many of these knocking around in future, other than at inflated prices on eBay.

LIST 34 - 09/04/10

The first fruits of two albums of 2010 I've been particularly waiting for - and for a very long time, at that! - make an appearance in this week's list. Serena-Maneesh return after nearly four years out with a sonic assault to make Kevin Shields proud, whilst another Kevin, Mr Drew, has finally got round to convening his splendid powerpop collective Broken Social Scene for the first time in five.

Couldn't let the week pass without letting the official 6Music protest song, "Joy Division Oven Gloves", get an airing. Coming to a chart new you! Probably. Josh Haden's reactivated slo-fi ensemble Spain gets the then and now treatment, and we round off with our own brief Malcolm McLaren tribute.

LIST 33 - 02/04/10

Their upcoming appearance at the Jazz Cafe in London was reason enough to dig out some vintage Cranes for this list, and I've been meaning to include The Monochrome Set's eponymous track for quite some time, too. Mostly newer stuff aside from these, though, with the Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip track taken from what's proven to be anything other than a difficult second out.

Three cheers to Goldfrapp for delivering the best pop moment of 2010 so far, I reckon - wonder if France has forgiven them yet for still not creating a Felt Mountain mk. 2?

LIST 32 - 26/03/10

A couple of really splendid duets among this week's assortment, I think -the redoubtable folkster Eliza Carthy guests with fop-pop chameleon Patrick Wold, whilst the legendary Robert Wyatt is heard in collaboration with easy listening / pop composer Bertrand Burgalat later on. There's a Therapy? then and now (impressive how up for it Andy Cairns' men still sound after two decades), as well as a cut from the new album by Field Music, to my mind the collection making the early running for album of the year.
