Hello again,

As promised, having worked through all of the Latitude line-up (more or less), our thoughts now turn to Indietracks, taking place for the third time in the Butterly Railway Musuem near Ripley, Derbyshire this very weekend.

This is my kind of festival - cheap (£55 for the weekend), small, civilised and very friendly. And if the music doesn't grab you, the free rides on the preserved steam trains is bound to!

Quite by accident the other day, I read on Wikipedia that the eternally wonderful Annie Nightingale was born on April 1st.

It's not a landmark birthday for her this year, but that was still all the excuse I needed to knock up a list of some of my (and your?) favourite tunes from her long-discontinued and sadly-missed Sunday evening request show on Radio 1 (1982-1994).

In the event I found enough material from the usual sources to fill two hour-long lists rather than the one usual "CD length" one, so here's part one for you. There's nothing newer than the early 90s on here, for obvious reasons, and as such there are fewer working videos accompanying the music than is usually the case. The songs themselves are all present and correct, though, and what a joy it's been to hear them again.

So.... the first list since PRS and Youtube came to blows, but apart from having to swerve a few official record label video providers to find stuff, life's carried on pretty much as normal in That Music List Towers.

Moral of story: aspire to listen to something other than Leona Lewis, and all shall be well. ;-D

Highlights of this list include a couple of Trembling Blue Stars songs from either end of that band's career (Note to self: five lists in and still not one single Field Mice track? What's wrong with you, Jezza?), and the oldest song I've found to date - a wonderful British calypso track from 1950 by Lord Beginner. Damon Albarn's digging out of such gems recorded by the first generation of West Indians to emigrate to Britain over 50 years ago is something I've enojoyed hugely.

Oh, and there's some shoegaze as well, for those of us who loved it back in the day!

LIST 04 - 06/03/09

As the title implies, everything on here hails from 2006.

Reason being? Well, 2006 was when I was working on the short-lived national daily newspaper The Sportsman, and out of necessity the hours were a little more exotic than your usual daily 9 to 5.

As such, many were the evenings that I'd not get back home until around 11pm, and dive straight onto the digital telly to catch MTV2's late-lamented 120 Minutes, or something on Huw Stephens' show, or 6Music, or similar, whilst still winding down from another day at the typeface.

The upshot is that whilst my pursuit and absorption of interesting music has never ever really let up, during 2006 it was probably as intense as it had been for many years previously.

Cardiacs double-header appears as a morale-booster whilst frontman Tim Smith remains incapacitated after - ironically - a cardiac arrest. Some things you just can't script. Bet Lawnmower Death are worried now.

The preamble:

Quite simply, That Music List is a vaguely weekly-ish list of URLs to songs past and present that I really like, and would love to share with anyone interested in extending their musical palate at no cost to themselves (other than your connection time on the Interweb, of course).

There's roughly about 80 minutes of music in each new list - partly as it's a manageable length of time, and partly to replicate (sort of) that feel of the list representing the contents of a really varied home-compiled CDR.

Musically you can expect to find... well... I shouldn't say too much as that would be self-defeating. Listen without prejudice!
