As long promised, here is a selection of highlights old and new from Warp Records, the pioneering Sheffield techno label-turned London all-round bastion of interesting new music. Me being me, I've unearthed enough stuff for two lists, so Part One it is!

LIST 26 - 13/11/09

Neither "Relax" nor "Two Tribes" was the most controversial singles of 1983-4, however much their creators may like to think otherwise. Shockheaded Peters' disarming swing-meets-post-punk paean to paid-for gay sex, "I, Bloodbrother Be", knocks allcomers out of the park, and it's a pleasure to be able to include this exceptional piece of work in a That Music List list.

Other tracks from way back in the day include just about my favourite instrumental opener to an album ever, so it would have been most inappropriate not to accord "Arrogance Gave Him Up" the same position here. There's also a then and now of Groove Armada, some cut and paste hilarity from Cassetteboy, the young British one-woman answer to Doo Rag, what Little Boots did before Little Boots (see if you can spot her), and the return of everyone's favourite ex-hobo.

The quarter-century has been reached, and still not a single song repeated! Nor should there be, really - we've only got through about 500 songs out of the whole history of recorded music (according to the Gospel of St Youtube ;-p) so far...

The splendid return of Loney, Dear features this time, as does the one stand-out track (by a very long way) on a rather inconsistent new Fake Blood EP. The Pastels and Tenniscoats' recent collaborative efforts have begotten a single, also included, and Sonic Youth get the now and then treatment.

The appearance of LFO is intended as a precursor to the That Music List special mentioned previously, celebrating Warp Records' 20th anniversary, whilst the appearance of "Brain" at the end of the list is just there to challenge you a bit. I blimmin' love it, anyway. ;-D

Always nice to remember a band after ages, think, "I wonder if they're on Youtube at all?", and then find out that they are - hence the joyous appearance of Glasgow's finest psychic-Germany-eyeballs-plastic-cowboy-housing-estate art punk-poppers The Yummy Fur. Result!

Other highlights this time include a double helping of Depeche Mode with tracks all of 19 years apart (and yep, I know I could have gone further back still...), new stuff from the queen of indiepop (and economics) Amelia Fletcher, a spirited Hot Chip cover, the first appearance of some Touareg beats on this site, and some compelling late-90s German electronica.
