That Music List: March 2009

Hello again,

It's the first list since PRS and YouTube came to blows, but apart from having to swerve a few official record label video providers to find stuff, life's carried on pretty much as normal in That Music List Towers.

Highlights of this list include a couple of Trembling Blue Stars songs from either end of that band's career (Note to self: five Lists in and still not one single Field Mice track? Are you feeling alright?), and the oldest song I've included thus far - a wonderful British calypso track from 1950 by Lord Beginner. Damon Albarn's digging out of such gems recorded by the first generation of West Indians to emigrate to Britain over 50 years ago is something I've enjoyed hugely.

Oh, and there's a little bit of shoegaze as well, for those of us who loved it back in the day!

Hello again,

As the title implies, everything on here hails from 2006.

Reason being? Well, 2006 was when I was working on the short-lived national daily newspaper The Sportsman, and out of necessity the hours were a little more exotic than your usual daily 9 to 5.

As such, many were the evenings that I'd not get back home until around 11pm, and dive straight onto the digital telly to catch MTV2's late-lamented 120 Minutes, or something on Huw Stephens' show, or BBC Radio 6 Music, or similar, whilst still winding down from another day at the typeface.

The upshot is that whilst my pursuit and absorption of interesting music has never ever really let up, during 2006 it was probably as intense as it had been for many years previously.

These are some of my highlights from 100s of potential candidates during that year. Enjoy.
