LIST 200 - 29/04/2016 (a Prince tribute)

Hello again,

I'll be perfectly honest - the plan had been to let the 200th List just pass by with a relatively anonymous general mix of things, just as the 100th had. Those intentions were, of course, promptly superseded by the tragic breaking events of last Thursday - too late to change List #199 to a full tribute to Prince Rogers Nelson, but not this one.

As with the Bowie tribute of regrettably too few weeks back, I've tried to cover as many bases as possible. There are personal favourite tracks from the entire span of Prince's recorded career - by turns direct, questioning, sly and funky, Controversy remains my absolute favourite.

I also thought it important to pay due regard to his generosity, that which led him to pass on absolutely nailed-on hits he wrote to other people - protégés or those otherwise associated with him - rather than score big with them himself. Sheila E, The Time and Tevin Campbell are included on that basis.

Thrown in also are a few cover versions of varying degrees of reverence - Pansy Division, Space Cowboy (a track denied a high place in the UK charts only due to a format breach), Soulwax and a striking reading of Alphabet Street by the Jesus & Mary Chain - plus a couple of affectionate homages from Flairs and longtime obsessives/fans Ween. I hope there's something for you all to enjoy here.

LIST 199 - 22/04/2016

Hello all,

It's late April, we're in Sheffield, so it must be World Championship Snooker time once again.  You'll not be hearing the V/VM version of the theme tune cueing in Hazel Irvine and company, however.

Steve Davis will of course be omnipresent during the seventeen days' coverage, so what better excuse do we need to include something from Magma, his favourite act of all.  I expect he's already thrown a few bob at the campaign launched earlier this year to fund a Magma documentary, assuming he isn't already an active part of either fund or documentary.

Hello again,

Two tracks from the venerable and prolific Mr Mould in his solo guise; an Elvis Costello demo made flesh by the former Rockpile guitarist with a famous footballing namesake; and a former Cardiac being bullied by Cardiacs' sinister Consultant in his new promo video.  All this and more!

LIST 197 - 08/04/2016

Hello again,

A protest of sorts to start this week's mixture, the opening piece by Malcolm Arnold of course also being the theme tune to What The Papers Say, which was broadcast for the final time on Radio 4 last week. I'm not sure my Sunday evenings propped up in bed with a mug of something warm and the wireless on are going to be quite the same.

Other stuff to enjoy this time around includes a pair of Wonder Stuff tracks a mere 27 years apart; a band in Dropkick whom you can enjoy between waits for Teenage Fanclub albums; and fresh product from Cardiacs guitarist Kavus Torabi in his Knifeworld guise (I understand the parent album contains a heart-rending tribute to his stricken band leader Tim Smith which is almost too poignant to listen to).

LIST 196 - 01/04/2016 (a 2006 special)

Hello again,

A diversion from the recent mixed bag Lists this week, with the first it-was-however-many-years-ago retrospectives of 2016.

It's a leap back exactly a decade this time - yep, it's really ten years ago since the ubiquitous whistling intro of Young Folks first graced the airwaves.

Dawnsio Dros Y Môr is taken from the first solo album by erstwhile Gorkys frontman Euros Childs - there's been one every year since. Contrariwise, there's been no further output since the eponymous sole album by Darkel (one half of Air) - a pity.

Elsewhere, it's a pleasure to be able to include what if I remember correctly was the first ever video from East Anglian cuddlecore favourites Bearsuit, albeit a good few years into their recorded career.
