LIST 22 - 25/09/2009 (1989 special, part three)

Hello again,

Picking up where we left off back in June, here is part three of That Music List's "it was 20 years ago today" sort of retrospective. Squirm in horror once more, as you realise all of these songs really were out two whole decades ago!

LIST 21 - 18/09/2009

Hello again,

I feel as if I'm a pretty late comer to the naughtily-monikered F*ck Buttons, but I'm glad I've got there at last. Like much on their two albums to date, Space Mountain is astonishing stuff - like a more aggressive, visceral Boards Of Canada, if that isn't doing both acts a disservice.

Other than that, this time around there's a double helping of veteran Japanese punk-poppers Shonen Knife (28 years and still going strong!); French hip-hop; Norwegian pronk; Cardiacs-obsessed circus indiepunks; the cutest Americans ever; and a boat full of robots playing Baroque music.

Oh yes, and something to test fans of Soundgarden for a sense of humour...

LIST 20 - 13/09/2009

Hello again,

How much does the new Muse single sound like a variation of the Doctor Who theme tune initially? A lot. But I still like it, for all that the lyrics have the merest whiff of impotent rebellion about them.

Elsewhere, there's two helpings of They Might Be Giants, a dramatic instrumental from Japan, stompy folk from Bristol, instrument-swapping all-female japes from Norway, the most twee Scottish duo ever, a popular American hobo, and an extraordinary experimental track from over 40 years ago.
