LIST 32 - 26/03/2010

Hello again,

Happy to offer you a couple of really splendid duets among this week's assortment - the redoubtable folkster Eliza Carthy guests with fop-pop chameleon Patrick Wolf in one, whilst the legendary Robert Wyatt is heard in collaboration with easy listening / pop composer Bertrand Burgalat later on.

There's additionally a Therapy? Then and Now (impressive how up for it Andy Cairns' troops still sound after two decades), as well as a cut from the new album by Field Music, which is making the early running for my favourite album of the year.

Elsewhere, there are two helpings of Nick Cave; the late-lamented legend of poetic Scottish whimsy; some German underground psych-pop as old as I am; and a particularly splendid Kate Bush cover.

Just Like Christmas is the finest festive song ever, incidentally, and that is not open for debate.

That Music List will return at some point in 2010 - same URL, same format, different tracks. Best wishes of the season to you all until then.

LIST 28 - 27/11/2009 (Warp Records 20th anniversary special, part two)

Hello again,

As promised, here is the second half of my look back over the Sheffield label's first two decades, with tracks old and new once more in evidence.

Always a pleasure to give the Aphex Twin, LFO and Autechre oldies in question a dusting off, and some of the new tracks are especially beguiling. Would it be too glib to call Tim Exile a one-man laptronica Cardiacs? Absolutely thrilled to discover him whilst compiling this selection.

There is just the one That Music List left for 2009 after this, and inevitably it's a wee bit festive. Keep 'em peeled.

Hello again,

As long promised, here is a selection of highlights old and new from Warp Records, the pioneering Sheffield techno label-turned London all-round bastion of interesting new music. Me being me, I've unearthed enough stuff for two Lists, so Part One it is!

This first half is literally a start-to-finish retrospective, including as it does the first ever Warp release from 1989 by Forgemasters, and a track by Nice Nice that's been out barely a fortnight.

LIST 26 - 13/11/2009

Hello again,

Neither Relax nor Two Tribes was necessarily the most controversial singles of 1983-4, however much their creators, producer or record lable may like to have thought otherwise. Shockheaded Peters' disarming, compelling swing-meets-post-punk paean to paid-for gay sex, I, Bloodbrother Be, holds stronger claims to that title as far as I'm concerned, and it's a pleasure to be able to include it today.

Other tracks from way back in the day include just about my favourite instrumental opener to an album ever, so it would have been most inappropriate not to accord Arrogance Gave Him Up the same position here.

There's also a then and now of Groove Armada, some cut and paste hilarity from Cassetteboy, what Little Boots did before Little Boots (see if you can spot her), and the return of everyone's favourite ex-hobo.
