LIST 116 - 17/12/13 (1993 special, part two)

Hello there,

Part two of this 20-years-ago retrospective includes very early (maybe the earliest?) recorded sightings of the likes of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and Beck.

It also includes the outstanding Mustard Gas by Action Painting!, a record of which Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley (in)famously said on Radio 1's Evening Session, "If this wasn't on Sarah Records, it would be a great record". I probably got disproportionately irate about that pearl of wisdom at the time, though two decades later it still doesn't read an awful lot smarter. Ah well.

LIST 115 - 16/12/13 (1993 special, part one)

Hello there,

1993 - the year I somehow got into university (thankyou, NEAB General Studies course, and to Manchester Uni for placing such high store in it); the year that my favourite sporting event descended into farce due to a defective starter and an equally defective piece of knicker elastic; and the year that series one of Smell of Reeves and Mortimer absolutely slayed (or should that have been Slade?) me.

Aside from all of that, these tunes came out. More from 20 years ago tomorrow.

LIST 114 - 13/12/13 (a fifth Then and Now special)

Hello there,

Time for another of these - one track from a given performer's current oeuvre, followed by one from their dim and often distant pasts. Not too many obtuse or unexpected selections in this List, I think, with the exception of one-time Peel faves, house act Tok Tok vs Soffy O. Didn't include Ludicrous Idiots as their "then" track, but the memory has certainly been piqued to put that on a regular List in the near future.

LIST 113 - 12/12/13

Hello again,

It's only just occurred to me that there's something a little naughty, perhaps, about following up a new Felt Tips track with an old Morrissey number, given how clear the former made their opinions on the latter on their debut album previously. It's as if I plan these lists, sometimes, it really is...

Absolutely beyond delighted to be able to include a new Steinbecks track in this List. Can it really be over two decades ago since the jarring opening of Letter From A Lifeboat by the Sugargliders first introduced Josh and Joel Meadows' work to me and countless others?
