Ten Eurovision 2017 thoughts, the morning after.
1) Entering a song which sounds like it wouldn't have seemed out of place on the La La Land soundtrack was a smart example of zeitgeist-grabbing hidden in plain sight. Good work, Portugal.
SALVADOR SOBRAL - Amar Pelos Dois
2) Salvador's appeal for meaningful songs at Eurovision suggests he's forgotten what won last year. D'oh. Thumbs up for his pro-refugee top in the semi-final press conference, though - and, indeed, for a victory which makes a further nonsense of the claims that the contest can't be won by any of the "classic", non-central/eastern/Baltic European countries.
3) Like the nation's football team, it'd be a shame if Belgium's current era of strong Eurovision entries doesn't translate into at least one tournament victory.
BLANCHE - City Lights
4) I'll live to a long age and still never understand the appeal of the Bulgarian runner-up.
KRISTIAN KOSTOV - Beautiful Mess
5) The choreography of the Moldovan entry, and the enthusiastic response to it, suggests Europe still remembers the old Kia-Ora advert fondly.
SUNSTROKE PROJECT - Hey Mamma
6) Croatia's extraordinary song (My Friend by Jacques Houdek) would have fared umpteen times better had it not been performed by a repeat offender on-record homophobe. People don't forget or forgive. Speaking of which...
7) Jury vote - 99 points. Public vote - 12 points. It's clear whom the UK needs to concentrate efforts on impressing.
LUCIE JONES - Never Give Up On You
8) Only the hapless beach bum Spanish entry prevented Germany from becoming the first nation to finish last three years running, yet they were winning the thing merely seven years ago. Get Stefan Raab out of retirement to write, produce or perform something. NOW.
LEVINA - Perfect Life
9) Two years in, the new voting system is bedding in very nicely, keeping things relevant and suspenseful until the final moments even if the winner has in actual fact run away with the competition. No excuse for not watching all three and a half hours now.
10) What does Verka Seduchka, the Ukranian Su Pollard star-on-head tribute act, do for the other 364 days of the year?
